Rugby Union

Snakepit R.U.F.C.

History

Shekou Rugby (Then known as Snakepit R.U.F.C) played it's first game of rugby union in November 1996.  The original match was due to take place at King's Park in  Hong Kong but the opposition, obviously fearful of the mainland savages from Shekou, failed to turn up.  The first game ended up being a Shekou v Shekou training session which was maybe not such a bad thing as many people were getting their first taste of contact rugby.

After sorting out the misunderstanding, the game was re-scheduled for November 10 when Shekou's finest athletes would finally unleash their brand of skillful, attacking rugby onto the Asian scene.  The opposition was the Kowloon Tigers and in reality the Shekou boys put up a brave fight but were unable to overcome the superior organisation of the Tigers.

Present

Shekou Rugby has recently been reborn due to an increasing number of people wanting to play contact rugby.  In recent times several players in Shekou have been traveling to play with the Guangzhou Rams as they had an organised 15 a 'side team and a few fixtures around the region.  With Shekou sometimes contributing 7 or so players to the Guangzhou side and a lack of regular matches it was decided that we would resurrect the Shekou team.  This was not meant to be in direct competition with the Rams, more of a support team, the idea was we could have regular 'training' games when proper fixtures were not available.  Another spin off was that we could help out local tournaments by entering two South China teams, this was recently accomplished at the Guangzhou 7's and the Macau Beach tournament where Shekou and Guangzhou both entered teams in a competition that had suffered from late call offs by several teams.
